The MacBook Air is Apple’s first attempt at a highly mobile laptop, and in true Apple style, they have created one of the most beautiful laptops on the market.
The MacBook Air In Detail
The MacBook Air sits in between the MacBook Pro and the MacBook, in that it is more mobile than the MacBook but not as powerful as the MacBook Pro.
It is a ridiculously thin laptop, at it’s thinnest measuring a mere 0.16 of an inch and it weighs only 3.0 pounds. The MacBook Air is a truly mobile laptop.
However, this mobility comes at a price, there is a significant lack of features. There is no disk drive in the MacBook Air, you need to purchase an additional external drive if you want one. The only way to connect to the internet is through a wireless connection, there is no ethernet port.
The MacBook Air also has a much smaller hard drive than other MacBooks, base systems coming with either 80 or 64 gigabyte hard drives.
MacBook Pro Specifications
The key specifications of the base model are as follows (correct at time of writing, April ‘08):
- 1.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
- 2GB memory
- 80GB 4200-rpm PATA hard drive
- Built-in 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
It’s a reasonable machine if you can be sure you’re not going to require much hard drive space, or a CD/DVD drive. Obviously it’s not going to be able to play games or decode videos but for every day tasks it should be more than adequate.
MacBook Air Conclusion
Even having pointed out many flaws of the MacBook Air, it’s likely you made your decision on the MacBook Air just by looking at it: you either love it or you hate it.
Apple manage to create an air of desirability around their products that negative reviews are unlikely to change.
The MacBook Air is a stunning laptop but not one that could be used easily as a primary laptop or computer. Perhaps then, the MacBook Air is best suited as a luxury secondary laptop, one you use when traveling or on the move.
