Microsoft Office, for better or worse, has become the defacto office publishing suite for businesses and individuals alike, there really is no mainstream competition. Most likely, every computer user is going to require an office suite, and usually when it comes down to it, that office suite is going to be Microsoft Office because that’s what nearly everyone else uses (apart from die hard open source fans).

There are three different versions of Microsoft Office 2008 available for mac, with the prices ranging from $150 - $500.

The most basic version is the home and student edition which includes Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Entourage. These are all the applications the average user is likely to need.

Next up is the standard edition, which includes all the applications in the home and student addition with additional support for Exchange email accounts. Therefore, the standard edition is really only worth the extra money for those who require Exchange access, mostly business users.

Finally, there is the special media edition, which includes Microsoft’s new Expression Media. I’ve looked online and I can’t really see what Expression Media actually is, apparently it’s for managing your media, whatever that means.

Microsoft Office 2008 Mac is a bit clunky and it’s obviously not a native mac application but it’s not a bad attempting at porting the applications.

There are a few annoying niggles, such as it doesn’t seem to handle spaces that well and has a habit of randomly following you around as you switch between spaces.

Microsoft Office 2008 For Mac Conclusion

Regardless of your view on Microsoft, your almost certainly going to need their Office software, it’s generally more polished than the other free alternatives, and is really a necessity for most MacBook users.
